Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of medicine that originated in India over 5000 years ago. It is based on the idea that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.

In Ayurvedic medicine, every person is unique and has their own distinct physical constitution called a “dosha”. Most of us fall into a combination of the three doshas, which are known as Vata (Air & Ether) Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth & Water), with one dosha that dominates our constitution, and then a secondary dosha that influences it. Ayurveda focuses on a natural and holistic approach to healing, using a combination of herbal remedies, dietary guidelines, yoga, meditation, massage, and other techniques to promote balance and restore health. It is considered a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a traditional system of medicine

According to Ayurveda, spring is a time of rejuvenation and renewal. Here are some Ayurvedic health tips to help you stay healthy during this season:

  1. Wake up early: Spring is the time when the sun rises early and so should you. Wake up before sunrise, ideally between 5 and 6 am, to take advantage of the early morning energy.
  2. Exercise regularly: Spring is a great time to start a new exercise routine. Gentle exercise is always best, especially a combination of yoga coupled with short interval cardio. Take advantage of the longer days and milder temperatures by going for a brisk walk, jog, or bike ride outdoors.
  3. Eat light and fresh: Spring is the time when fresh fruits and vegetables are beginning to be in season again. Focus on eating plenty of leafy baby greens, sprouts, and seasonal fruits like berries and grapefruit to keep your body hydrated and nourished. On colder days, enjoy vegetable soups and sprouted sourdough bread. On warm days focus on salads with plenty sprouts and light dressings of lemon juice and a little olive oil.
  4. Avoid heavy and oily foods: As the weather warms up, your body may naturally crave lighter foods. Avoid heavy, oily, and fried foods, which can cause indigestion and sluggishness.
  5. Minimize alcohol consumption: Alcohol dulls the mind, interferes with proper sleep, and clogs the body with toxic waste. Since spring is a natural cleaning season for our bodies, and alcohol bogs our system down so that we can’t effectively rid ourselves of the waste that accumulated over winter.
  6. Stay hydrated: As the temperature rises, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Start your day with a tall glass of warm lemon water. Lemon water works to cleanse you first thing in the morning, and primes your digestion for the day. Drink it on an empty stomach first thing after brushing teeth and oil pulling. Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day as well, or even fill a thermos with hot water and take small sips throughout the day. Oddly, this does a much better job of hydrating you than drinking cold water!
  7. Practice mindfulness: Spring is a time of renewal, and it’s a great opportunity to practice mindfulness and introspection. Take time to reflect on your goals, values, and priorities, and make any necessary changes to align them with your current needs.
  8. Get plenty of rest: As the days get longer, it can be tempting to stay up late and enjoy the extra daylight. However, it’s important to get plenty of rest to support your body’s natural detoxification processes. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
  9. Cleanse your body: Help shed the heavy qualities that are prevalent in winter using Ayurvedic herbs and supportive cleansing techniques.   10. Practice Nature Bathing: Nature bathing, also known as forest bathing or shinrin-yoku, is a practice of spending time in nature and immersing oneself in its sights, sounds, smells, and overall atmosphere of the natural world to promote well-being. The term originated in Japan in the 1980s and has since become popular around the world. Slow hikes, or even just sitting in a green park in the middle of the city for 30 minutes has been shown to have a positive effect on mood and our overall sense of well-being.
